The Framework

The Seven-Step Scriptural Framework

Seven themes on money, each defined entirely by the King James Version passages beneath it.

What does the Bible teach about handling money?

The Bible presents money first as a matter of ownership: the earth is the LORD'S, and the fulness thereof (Psalms 24:1, KJV), and the silver and the gold are His (Haggai 2:8, KJV). It states that it is required in stewards that a man be found faithful (1 Corinthians 4:2, KJV).

The passages gathered under the seven steps below state that the hand of the diligent maketh rich (Proverbs 10:4, KJV), that the borrower is servant to the lender (Proverbs 22:7, KJV), that there is treasure to be desired and oil in the dwelling of the wise (Proverbs 21:20, KJV), that God loveth a cheerful giver (2 Corinthians 9:7, KJV), and that godliness with contentment is great gain (1 Timothy 6:6, KJV).

Key passages:  Psalms 24:1 · Proverbs 22:7 · Proverbs 21:20 · 2 Corinthians 9:7 · 1 Timothy 6:6

Seven themes concerning money run through Scripture, beginning where Scripture begins them — the earth is the LORD'S, and the fulness thereof (Psalms 24:1, KJV).

Ownership

The earth and everything in it belongs to the LORD (Psalms 24:1, KJV).

The earth is the LORD'S, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein.

— Psalms 24:1 (KJV)

The silver is mine, and the gold is mine, saith the LORD of hosts.

— Haggai 2:8 (KJV)

But thou shalt remember the LORD thy God: for it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth, that he may establish his covenant which he sware unto thy fathers, as it is this day.

— Deuteronomy 8:18 (KJV)

Behold, the heaven and the heaven of heavens is the LORD'S thy God, the earth also, with all that therein is.

— Deuteronomy 10:14 (KJV)

11 Thine, O LORD, is the greatness, and the power, and the glory, and the victory, and the majesty: for all that is in the heaven and in the earth is thine; thine is the kingdom, O LORD, and thou art exalted as head above all.

12 Both riches and honour come of thee, and thou reignest over all; and in thine hand is power and might; and in thine hand it is to make great, and to give strength unto all.

— 1 Chronicles 29:11-12 (KJV)

10 For every beast of the forest is mine, and the cattle upon a thousand hills.

11 I know all the fowls of the mountains: and the wild beasts of the field are mine.

For the earth is the Lord's, and the fulness thereof.

— 1 Corinthians 10:26 (KJV)

Stewardship

He that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much (Luke 16:10, KJV).

10 He that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much: and he that is unjust in the least is unjust also in much.

11 If therefore ye have not been faithful in the unrighteous mammon, who will commit to your trust the true riches?

— Luke 16:10-11 (KJV)

14 # For the kingdom of heaven is as a man travelling into a far country, who called his own servants, and delivered unto them his goods.

15 And unto one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one; to every man according to his several ability; and straightway took his journey.

16 Then he that had received the five talents went and traded with the same, and made them other five talents.

17 And likewise he that had received two, he also gained other two.

18 But he that had received one went and digged in the earth, and hid his lord's money.

19 After a long time the lord of those servants cometh, and reckoneth with them.

20 And so he that had received five talents came and brought other five talents, saying, Lord, thou deliveredst unto me five talents: behold, I have gained beside them five talents more.

21 His lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.

22 He also that had received two talents came and said, Lord, thou deliveredst unto me two talents: behold, I have gained two other talents beside them.

23 His lord said unto him, Well done, good and faithful servant; thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.

24 Then he which had received the one talent came and said, Lord, I knew thee that thou art an hard man, reaping where thou hast not sown, and gathering where thou hast not strawed:

25 And I was afraid, and went and hid thy talent in the earth: lo, there thou hast that is thine.

26 His lord answered and said unto him, Thou wicked and slothful servant, thou knewest that I reap where I sowed not, and gather where I have not strawed:

27 Thou oughtest therefore to have put my money to the exchangers, and then at my coming I should have received mine own with usury.

28 Take therefore the talent from him, and give it unto him which hath ten talents.

29 For unto every one that hath shall be given, and he shall have abundance: but from him that hath not shall be taken away even that which he hath.

30 And cast ye the unprofitable servant into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

— Matthew 25:14-30 (KJV)

44 Of a truth I say unto you, that he will make him ruler over all that he hath.
